The fastest way to avoid a misleading freight quote is to make every supplier quote the same quantity, carton data, destination, shipping method, and Incoterm.
Why a fixed shipping number is usually not useful
Alibaba is a marketplace, not one shipping company. A small sample may move by express courier, while a production order may move by air freight, sea LCL, or a full container. Each method prices weight, volume, speed, and handling differently.
The same product can also produce very different quotes depending on the US ZIP code, whether the address is residential or commercial, and whether the supplier is quoting EXW, FOB, CIF, DAP, or DDP.
Ask for these details before comparing prices
- Number of cartons, carton dimensions, gross weight, and total CBM.
- The shipping method: express courier, air freight, sea LCL, or sea FCL.
- The chargeable weight used for courier or air freight.
- The Incoterm and named place, such as FOB Ningbo or DDP to a specific US ZIP code.
- Which export, customs, duty, tax, terminal, and final-delivery charges are included or excluded.
- The quote validity date and what could change the price before shipment.
Compare quotes on the same basis
| Quote detail | Supplier A | Supplier B | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantity | 300 units | 300 units | Different quantities change both product and freight cost. |
| Carton data | Stated | Missing | A freight price is hard to verify without size and weight. |
| Shipping term | DDP to ZIP code | EXW | These prices do not include the same responsibilities. |
| Included charges | Written list | Not stated | Destination charges can appear after the first quote. |
Calculate landed cost per unit
Do not stop at the supplier's unit price. Add the product cost, freight, duties or taxes, customs or brokerage fees, domestic delivery, packaging, platform fees, and a realistic allowance for defects or replacements.
If 300 units cost $840 and freight costs $620, freight is already about 74% of the goods value. Before paying, confirm whether the final selling price can still cover the full landed cost and leave a margin.
Red flags in an Alibaba shipping quote
- The supplier says "shipping included" but does not state the Incoterm.
- Carton size, gross weight, chargeable weight, or CBM is missing.
- A DDP or door-to-door quote does not explain customs clearance, duties, taxes, and final delivery.
- The chat quote does not match the PI or Alibaba order draft.
- The quote has no validity date or the supplier pressures you to pay before details are corrected.
